Fiji Journal Entry: No Laugh Zacky

I was looking through my old journal entries from Fiji for a project and ran across some amusing anecdotes. Below are some excerpts, the first being one where I was listing things in bullet point format I’d forgotten to mention in an earlier entry. I redacted the names of the parents and changed some names to protect the kids’ identities. Also, for context, Amitesh was a baby boy, maybe 1ish or younger? And Bina was a little girl around 5 years old.

-hilarious kid lives upstairs — Zachariah. Mom’s half Fijian, half Indo-Fijian, dad’s Indian. “Zacky” is a little kid–maybe 2?– who doesn’t speak very clearly and likes to demand “No laugh!” very abruptly in such a manner as to make it impossible — for me, at least — to do anything but laugh.

-ripping myself out of some fucked up (in amusing ways) dreams at 3:20 pm on a Sunday afternoon because I think I hear someone yell, “Anaconda movie!” and I feel like I should watch it since it was filmed in Fiji.

Today I had no school in honor of Fiji Independence Day yesterday. It was awesome.

No Laugh Zacky made me laugh lots when he stared at me and said, “Go away!” then “bye” in roughly the same breath. Amitesh had me laughing when he got so excited about slapping my hand in a low high five that he started grinning adorably and wheezing in what was apparently his super uber cute kid version of a laugh.

I learned more about Islam and Muslims and a few other religions. And, partially on accident and partially as a joke, I ended up having Bina spell my name as “prawn”.

Fiji journal entry, aka Fun with languages

I was reminded of my time in Fiji so I decided to pull out one of the journals I wrote when I was there. Below is an entry I wrote. Yes, I wrote it like that including the emoticon lol I apparently write like I’m writing a story online even when writing in a journal.

Natasha invited several people over for food. Sherin and her daughters Zarin and… someone ^^;… and Aziz’s sis and kid, I think, and, hell, not sure who these people are. Anyway, Zarin, Natasha and I were in the kitchen. Before that, actually, everyone all night has been chattering rapidly mostly in Hindi. I find it makes a nice background noise and don’t really pay attention a lot. I heard Tash say something to someone– it had mangtaa in it (want) so I jokingly said:

“Ek million dollar mangtaa~?” (Do you want a million dollars?)

Sherin said my accent is just like theirs. I told her I thought I had a crappy one–then told Tash she’d been teasing me about it too much.

And she’s like, “Of course. I take credit. I must be a really good teacher.”

A while after that, Zarin, Tash and I were in the kitchen. I was putting away my water pump and Zarin was getting more rice pudding Tash had made for the occasion. She said something in Hindi that I didn’t understand so I didn’t pay attention. Tash paused, then turned to Zarin and repeated, but suddenly I understood it:

“Gee, I made something good?” Tash said, and before Zarin could answer I blinked and said, surprised:

“Oh! That was English!”

Zarin, in the middle of taking a bite of rice pudding, started laughing, crumpling in on herself in the classical I’m Too Amused To Stand Straight position.

“You said it with a Hindi accent… I just thought it was Hindi and was thinking how I didn’t understand it and then I realized it was English…” I continued, bemused.

“Boy, these Americans,” Tash commiserated to Zarin. “After 8 their mind just goes.” She waved her fingers helpfully around her temples.

“Hey!” I said, laughing. “I’m the one speaking English with a Hindi accent.”

Zarin started laughing more, pacing around the kitchen in amusement while I switched to mocking the Hindi accent.

“Whaaat language are you SPEAKINGG, hai?” I teased Natasha. We were all laughing by now and I started toward my room. “IIII like English hai!” And right before I opened my door I did our classic, “konchii bole?” line.

I heard Tash laughing harder, while the other visitors in the living room started saying to each other “konchii bole!” as if wondering if they’d heard me right. It was amusing.

Konchii bole = what are you saying? At least, I think it means that. lol.

[[The entry went into an update on the status of the paper I was writing and went into other topics but I saw this one part below and thought it was also kind of funny so I’m including it as well]]

PS: I killed my first cockroach today. He was under my eye care solution and I had my glasses and contacts off so I couldn’t see him and it was freaky and then he ran for S’s door so I had to stop him. I squished him so bad his insides oozed out but he still kept trying to run and twitching and I threw a shoe on him and waited for Natasha to end it.

She came over and went, “Wow!”

“What?” I asked, paranoid.

“There’s almost nothing left of him. If this was CSI I’d walk in and say– Impossible! Unsolvable! Not enough evidence! Half his body is gone!”

Ais’ Terrible Art: Stonework

And now we’re up to date with the latest Ais’ Terrible Art, that I’m crossposting today to tumblr.

This is actually unrelated to ICoS. I bought a program and wanted to test it out by doing a shorter drawing. I decided to try doing an art piece inspired by something I wrote in writing group on April 2, 2012. We were given a randomly generated word and had to write something in 7 minutes based on it. I got the word ‘stonework.’

Here is the video of me drawing it:

This is what I wrote:

And here is the final product on its own:

WIP Files: ART, unrelated, 1/25/14

wip012514

WIP Files 1/25/14. I didn’t do anything the last few days so I thought I should do something today. I thought it would be fun to record a drawing as I did it. Unfortunately I apparently didn’t know how to use the program because for some reason it only recorded the toolbar of Paint lolzzz.

Anyway I make no excuses for why she’s all screwed up proportionately and lopsided other than because, as I keep saying, I really just can’t draw very well lol

This whole thing was done from beginning to end in Paint. She isn’t anyone in particular, I just started randomly drawing whatever came to mind to try out the recording software. I’m really sad it didn’t record 😦 Oh this took idk. About an hour. Mostly it was hard trying to do shading in Paint without harsh lines. I didn’t really succeed in the shading but oh well. By that time I was just having fun with colors.

Next for WIP Files: I need to get some damn writing done this weekend! If I can be on top of it mayhaps I’ll even finish the Project Fierce thing. I hope.

Misc art: sketches

I’ve been going through my old stuff trying to figure out if there’s anything else ICoS-related to share. We started writing the story within the year after I graduated college so a lot of the very early icos bits are mixed in with folders from college. I used to doodle all the time when writing notes. I found a few that I figured I may as well share. The proportions are off/sometimes there are strange designs, etc, but that’s because I was using a pen so I couldn’t erase anything. Then I ran across miscellaneous other stuff and decided to just post it as a random collection.

This first post is all NON-icos stuff. The next one has the random icos stuff I found.
